Range Matters & the NEW Leaf is NOT Much Better. I Blogged About That & People KNOW I Was Right. 2013 LEAF S Sticker Showing The Combined Average Range Of 75 Miles.... The Fact is the ASTERICK Should Say "What" the Range Really Is.

Several days ago we broke the news that the 2013 Nissan LEAF had been rated at 75 miles, according to Monroney (EPA) window stickers that had been seen showing up at dealership lots.   Today, Nissan themselves confirmed that rating, but with one big *asterisk.

Against the 2012 Nissan LEAF, rated at 73 miles of range, the new 2013 model only appears to have gained a very small 2 extra miles.  But that is simply not the case.
In 2012, the EPA test was based on a full 100%discharge of the battery.  For 2013 it is a blend between what Nissan calls its “80% Long Life charging mode”and the “100% Long Distance Mode charging,” which is the factory default setting.  Combining the two modes, nets the new 75 mile range rating.

Each Leaf battery has 48 modules and each module cost about $1000 to produce*. That's $48,000 JUST for the battery modules. *Nissan says they will replace the modules for about $650; I was told it's due to "recycling".

Just for modules

It's estimated that to "refresh" each car under the new warranty the average leaf will need approx. 25-35 modules (lets say 30) that $18,000.  In Arizona the amount to refresh some cars will be 70 modules. $42,000.

The car cost less (after the federal tax credits) then just the cost of 1st set of modules.

The price of 600-630 per module is AFTER the supply chain cost savings of having it be "mass marketed"... well supposedly mass marketed.

Other data that I'm getting verified is NISSAN better batteries will NOT be made in the USA....  I'm getting that confirmed.  Evidently they do not have a viable battery and out going to buy one... most likely it will be made in Korea.

the New 2013 Leaf is a fable... just like the Emperors New Clothes.

Someone PLEASE look into HOW NISSAN can lease a car for almost a "third" less than Honda.
NISSAN in October 2012 (the month before the election discounted the Leaf to 139 a month for a 2 year lease.  Many people told me that was a gimmick so the President's DOE would look good.
